The world of bees

In Artosilla, a very special Pyrenean village, managed in an assembly way and recovered stone by stone by its inhabitants through its cultural association, hides A-Redolada, a small cooperative that is committed to protecting bees and defending a way of life that respects the environment.

On this visit we will visit its unique beekeeping classroom and we will get inside a beehive to learn about the biology of these insects: Who are the bees, how they live, how they organise themselves, how they communicate... and more curiosities.

We will also discuss the dangers and threats posed by these insects, and their important role in nature.

And finally, we will get to know the products of the beehive from the use that bees make of them, and we will do a guided tasting of the most relevant ones (honey, pollen, propolis...) to learn to distinguish their characteristics and properties.

  • A-Redolada organises other activities that you can consult here, such as a candle-making workshop or a visit to a beehive.
  • Don't forget to ask them to tell you the story of Artosilla...
  • If you want to spend the night in the area we recommend you go to L'Almada de Yebra

Your experience begins and ends in Artosilla, an old village located in the Pre-Pyrenees and owned by the Government of Aragon; in 1986 it was ceded, together with the villages of Aineto and Ibort, to the Artiborain Association, so that it could rebuild and repopulate them after more than two decades of abandonment, neglect and deterioration.

The initial vision of the new settlers was to completely rebuild the village and recover a cultural heritage that was being lost. Subsequently, other elements have been added to this vision, related to bio-construction, ecological agriculture, voluntary simplicity and, in short, a more sustainable way of life in line with the ecovillage movement. For some time now, Artosilla has been part of the Iberian Ecovillage Network (RIE).

The cooperative A-Redolada is formed by Azpe and Álvaro, who came to repopulate Artosilla and fell in love with bees and a sustainable way of life; after the reconstruction of a hut using traditional and bio-construction methods, in 2019, this hut was converted into a beekeeping classroom, workshop and warehouse.
